Workshop on surround sound
Film & Media Arts Department
University of Missouri, Kansas City
Using examples ranging from jungles in
Venezuela to New York City subways, students
were introduced to some tools and methods for recording surround audio in difficult and often remote locations.
This was a hands-on class where everyone had the opportunity to experiment with double mid-side recording, a method using 3 Schoeps ccm mics & a portable recorder to create extremely high quality 5.1 surround atmospheres. In addition to the advantages of the kit being very lightweight, compact & discreet, it also allows great flexibility in both post matrixing as well as in the field, as the same mics can be re-arranged for various flavors of stereo such as MS, XY & ORTF.
